Gas Value Chain

This is the study programme for 2019/2020. It is subject to change.


The Gas Value Chain consists of several segments. These are: Brief summary of the entire Gas Value Chain characteristics as different from the Oil Value Chain; Gas Market Characteristics including key environmental issues; Gas Reserves Booking - SEC rules and Industry opinions; Gas Sales and Purchase Agreements and trading systems; The Norwegian Gas Transport System (The Norwegian Gas Machine) including regulatory and technical conditions; Thermodynamics related to gas processing and separation. Characteristics of LNG production; Transport and Distribution including LNG as an independent product in the market place; Gas as a transportation fuel - current practice and expected development; Industrially important gas conversion processes: fertilizer, methanol, and transportation fuels.

Learning outcome

On completion, students will have a good understanding of all the important aspects in the natural gas value chain, such as gathering, processing, dispatching, marketing, transportation, local distribution, EU natural gas policies and environmental policies. The students will also understand the essential technologies and economics of the three most important natural gas products: pipeline gas, liquefied natural gas, natural gas converted products, e.g., fertilizer, methanol, and liquid fuels.

Project work 20%; Final project presentation 80%, which will be evaluated in group as well as individually. Grades for project work is given to the students before the presentation. Sensor sets the final grade in the subject.

Coursework requirements
