Drilling Fluid Technology

Fundamental principles of drilling fluids. Drilling fluid components and how they function. Rheology and flow properties. Cuttings transport and hole cleaning. Pressure control. Stability of drilling fluids. Basic fluid systems. Environmental concerns. Testing procedures.

Learning outcome

The student should be able to contribute in the design of common drilling fluids used for well drilling. Further, the student should also be able to understand the philosophy of the design of drilling fluids. The student should also be able to understand the general picture of drilling- and completion-fluids used for drilling and production.

Coursework requirements

Laboratory exercises
Mandatory laboratory work should be carried out at the assigned groups and given schedule. Sick leave or absence due to other reasons must be communicated as soon as possible to the laboratory personnel. One cannot expect rescheduled access to the laboratory for completion of the laboratory work without permission from laboratory personnel.
Laboratory work and all reports must be approved by the specified deadline.
If mandatory laboratory work and reports are not approved, the candidate will not be qualified to take the course exam.

Due to limited capacity at the lab this course will only be available for a limited number of students where this course is either compulsory or recommended elective in the correponding study program. (§ 3-7, pkt 5). Students that do not fulfill these requirements have to apply the head of department to get access to this course in accordance with the regulations for application to courses.
