Financial statement analysis and security valuation

This course is an advanced course in financial statements and valuation at Master's level. It covers techniques of fundamental analysis, such as how financial statements are used in valuation, cash accounting, accrual accounting, forecasting, quality, risk and return.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
  • Have the necessary background knowledge to understand financial accounting statements from a valuation perspective.

Skills
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • Carry out a valuation of a company.

General competence
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
  • Have an understanding of financial statements and an overview of valuation theory and practice.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of analysis of companies and be able to perform a valuation.

Contents

This course is an advanced course in financial statements and valuation at Master's level. It covers basic techniques of fundamental analysis.
Performance evaluation of companies and valuation of both assets and liabilities, including whole businesses, becomes increasingly important for auditors, controllers and managers of companies. The course covers basic techniques of fundamental analysis, profitability analysis, growth analysis, liquidity analysis and decision making based on this. Upon completion of the course the participant will be able to perform a thorough analysis of a company, or part of company. The participant will also be equipped to discuss relevant parameters in a valuation and will be able to perform a sophisticated stand-alone valuation.
The course covers the following topics:
  1. How to analyse and make performance evaluations based on financial statements, and how they are used in valuation
  2. Cash accounting and accrual accounting
  3. Accrual accounting and valuation
  4. Forecasting and valuation analysis
  5. Analysis of the quality of financial statements
  6. The analysis of risk and return

Mandatory hand-in
There will be a mandatory working requirement in order to be eligible for exam. Students will be required to submit a written assignment.
