Specialization in English with Research Paper

The student will write a thesis in one of two sub-disciplines of English: (applied) linguistics or literature. The students may choose between two research fields/themes: Sociolinguistics or Literature. At the beginning of the semester, the students will follow an intensive course that introduces the research area and provides a theoretical and methodological basis for their work on the thesis.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course, the students will have gained knowledge of:
  • Key issues within the research area chosen for the bachelor thesis
  • Relevant scholarly literature relating to the thesis

Those students who work within sociolinguistics will have gained knowledge of:
  • dialects, standard language and linguistic variation and change
  • gender, age, class and region as factors of linguistic variation
  • language contact and multilingualism

Those students who work within literature will have gained knowledge of:
  • research and writing methods in a specific area of literature
  • a range of theoretical approaches to literary texts and other cultural manifestations

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • discuss central theories, concepts and approaches within the research area of the bachelor thesis
  • place the research area in the context of English studies as a whole and evaluate its importance
  • discuss key issues relating to the theme of the thesis
  • understand and make use of relevant research Methods
  • show critical and independent understandings of aspects related to the study of literature and culture in general

General competence
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • formulate research questions for thesis writing
  • work independently with complex issues and present the findings in a thesis
  • master written academic English
  • show familiarity with and correct use of appropriate academic terminology and references


At the beginning of the semester, the students follow an intensive course in the form of a lecture series either in Sociolinguistics or in Literature.
This course will provide the students with an overview of sociolinguistics and the study of linguistic variation and change. The focus will be on key concepts such as dialect and standard language, class- and gender based variation, ideas of correctness and multilingualism. The social and cultural context of linguistic variation will be a central theme.
This part of the course will provide students with an insight into specific topics in literature. The focus will be on reading a text or set of texts closely, researching the scholarly conversation surrounding the text(s), and writing closed-form thesis-driven prose. Through the study of literary, historical and theoretical texts, the students will examine a specific period (or multiple periods if that is appropriate) in order to contextualize their arguments. Students will also discuss and present their work as part of their research and learning process.
The students will write a thesis within the subdiscipline studied. The student will choose the topic, research material and relevant reading in consultation with a supervisor. The student must submit a thesis proposal containing a title, research questions, and argument statement, as well as drafts of the thesis, by published deadlines.

Students must have a minimum of 50 ECTS in introductory English courses or equivalent in order to begin the specialization.

The thesis is an independent scholarly research paper of 5500 words +/- 10 %, not including appendices, tables and references.

Coursework requirements

75% attendance at work in progress seminars, Approved title and project proposal within the given deadline, Submission of at least two thesis drafts within the given deadlines, A minimum of two supervision meetings with the academic supervisor
Students are not entitled to further supervision in connection with a new exam attempt/new admission.

Course assessment

Evaluations are an integral part of the quality control system at the University of Stavanger. The system at IKS includes student evaluation of courses in the form of a final evaluation of at least two courses within each subject during one academic year.
