Environmental Chemistry and HES

This is the study programme for 2020/2021.


This is a basic course in both chemistry, (naming of inorganic and organic chemicals, acids/bases, equilibria, aqueous solutions, electrochemistry, structural organic chemistry) and environmental science (green production, air and water pollution and cleaning, solid waste management and recycling, non-renewable and renewable energy sources, energy saving and efficiency).

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student should:
Be able to name inorganic compounds.
Have a basic knowledge of organic chemistry including naming simple compounds.
Understand and be able to use the concept of moles in reactions, solutions, gas phase.
Have understood the principles of equilibria.
Have a basic knowledge of the water-solubility of compounds.
Have a basic knowledge of redox reactions.
Have a basic knowledge of acid and bases.
Understand electrochemistry, simple batteries and the basic process of corrosion.
Have a basic knowledge of types of air and water pollution and remedial treatments, fresh water availability, treatment of rubbish and solid waste, non-renewable and renewable energies, energy saving methods and HSE/work environment issues.

Contents

Chemistry: The structure of the atom. Chemical bonds. Intermolecular interactions. The Naming of compounds, use of the mole concept in solids, solutions and the gas phase, reaction equations, equilibrium, acids and bases, reduction/oxidation, water-solubility of compounds, electrochemistry, and organic chemistry. Environmental science: Ecology, water and air pollution, water purification, wastewater treatment, energy, wastes, cleaner technology. Work environment, chemical and physical environmental factors.

You must be correctly answer some questions in both chemistry and environmental science to pass the exam. Equations book (”Tabell og Formelsamling”) by Cappelen, Dalen et al. (No other help books are allowed except this one). Calulator only of the type Citizen SR-270X, HP-30S, Casio FX82 or TI-30..
