Introduction to Mechanical Engineering

This is the study programme for 2019/2020. It is subject to change.


Introduction to mechanical enginering by learning digital tools like MATLAB and a relevant CAD software and by using the experimental facilities in the laboratories to determine mechnical properties of structural materials. Through assignments and project work the student will get an introduction to the engineering profession in cooperation with other students.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: Have basic knowledge about MATLAB as an engineering tool and know how to use MATLAB as a tool to solve engineering problems. Know how to use predefined MATLAB functions. Basic knowledge about geometric description of machine parts. Basis knowledge about mechanical properties of materials and how to determine these properties by experiments.
Skills: Be able to write self-defined MATLAB programs. Be able to use CAD software for 3D- modelling. Be able to determine mechanical properties of materials by tensile and Charpy testing.
General competence: Can apply flow diagrams and pseudocode for development and description of algorithms. Can plan and solve a project assignment in cooperation with other students. Ability to write a technical report. Can identify security, vulnerability, privacy and data security aspects of products and systems using ICT.

Reports from DAK-project and Lab. work in material science are submitted for each group and graded. All three parts have to be passed in order to pass the course.

Compulsory assignment using MATLAB and compulsory assignment in ICT security must be approved before the student can access the final exam. Compulsory assignments in Engineering Drawing. Compulsory laboratory attendance in material technology and engineering measurements.

Method of work

MATLAB:
3 hours of lectures and 3 hours exercise pr week for the first 6 weeks. Compulsory assignment.
ICT SECURITY:
Individual online course. Open until 3 weeks before exam.
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY:
2 hours of lectures per week for the first 3 weeks: Introduction to mechanical engineering and material technology.
4 hours training/exercising pr week for the next 5 weeks: Computer-aided design (CAD). Compulsory assignments in CAD software. Project work in CAD software the last 4 weeks, with 2 hours supervision per week. 2-4 students pr group.
4 hours compulsory laboratory exercise in material technology. 2-4 students pr group.
