Strategy and Management

Many of the students taking a masters degree at Industrial Economics, Risk management and Planning will be part of a management team during their career. Even as newcomers in the industry, several will be involved in the organisations management- and strategy processes. Knowledge about different strategy tools, strategy planning and strategy implementation is essential in a management role.
Many businesses experience rapid changes in competition climate as a result of changes in local markets due to increased globalisation. The consequence is changes in customer preferences and demands for new goods and services. New products and quality standards require innovation and new competence. Leadership can have an important impact on value creation, both technologically and socially, especially in competence driven businesses. Knowledge and insight in what constitutes good leadership is essential for building a good framework for the organisations value creation.
Development, growth and external and internal adjustment has to be managed. As do learning and innovative processes. Leadership affects the organisations use and development of social, technological and commercial recourses. Strategic leadership integrates and combines knowledge of different competitive environments with relevant strategic tools and alternatives. Leadership is an essential ingredient at all levels in this process, from analysis to implementation.

Learning outcome

After completing the course of Strategy and Leadership the student should have gained insight and competence based on new research and theories about the basic framework of strategy analysis, managing organisational adaptation and strategic change. The student will learn how to use industry analysis in combinations with strategic tools to develop business strategy. Furthermore it is important to understand how organisational culture and design can influence the role of resources and capabilities in strategy formulation.
Changes in global economy may affect local industry. Also the demand for sustainable solutions can have great impact on different entreprises. Students should get a better understanding of how economic and political changes can influence the development withing different brands and industries.

Contents

The aim of this course is to increase the students understanding of different factors than can effect the organisations conditions to succeed. This demands a comprehensive approach to the organisation, the competitive environment and leadership. These factors will influence the management's strategy process and strategy execution.

  • Strategic analysis; methods and tools

  • The role of resources and capabilities in strategy formulation
  • Internal and external conditions for competitive advantage. Different competitive strategies
  • Globalisation and international growth strategies; strategic alliances
  • Strategy implementation; measurement, change and innovation
  • CSR. Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Ethical considerations in leadership and management.

The course is structures around the following main topics:
  • Leadership and management
  • Strategic analysis; methods and tools
  • Implementation; leading change and innovation

This will represent an holistic approach to the different topics and disciplines that are integrated in Strategic Leadership. The intention is to move toward an integration of different theoretical approaches with contributions from management literature, economics, organisational theory and psychology. The complexity of subject shall stimulate critical and analytical thinking and ability to be a competent partner in a concrete organisational setting.
