Environmental Loads

This is the study programme for 2019/2020. It is subject to change.

The course will introduce environmental loads on civil engineering structures and how they impact the structural design.

Learning outcome

The course is to give students an introduction to environmental loads. Upon completing the course, the students shall:
  • be familiar with snow and ice loads effects on structures as well as the load design values
  • be familiar with effects of earthquake on structures, and be able to compute structural response to earthquake by using the design spectrum
  • be familiar with the mean and time-varying wind forces on structures, and be able to compute the static and quasi-static wind-induced response
  • be familiar with the linear wave theory and wave and current loads on structures
  • be familiar with the design loads and design principles

Contents

Snow and ice loads. Earthquake loads. Wind and wave statistics. Mean and fluctuating wind forces. Linear wave theory. Wave forces. Design loads and design principles.
