Road planning

This is the study programme for 2020/2021.

The course is offered in the 3rd semester of the bachelor building programme. It will give understanding and knowledge about road and transport planning and engineering and training in computer-based road design.

Learning outcome

  • Knowledge of the Norwegian Road Administration's handbooks in road planning/road design
  • Knowledge of principles for geometric design and the technical execution of roads and GS roads
  • Knowledge of using data tools for use in road planning
  • Knowledge of materials for road use as well as various laboratory tests
  • Knowledge of planning processes, technical plans, and regulation plans

  • Be able to plan transport and traffic systems and design roads and streets of different types
  • Be able to use computer programs to plan and project
  • Knowing legislation, road standards, and technical and aesthetic forming parameters

General competence
  • Be able to plan and present a project assignment in collaboration with other students, both in writing and graphically
  • Contribute electronic presentation of road projects


The course provides basic knowledge about road and transport planning and engineering and knowledge to plan and design streets and roads.
The course provides training in the use of computer tools in road design, preparation and presentation
of road plans. Training in the use of Novapoint, laboratory exercises with report, and project assignment in engineering with Novapoint.

The assessment consists of a written exam, a laboratory report and a project assignment. The project assignment consist of two parts: a lab report and an exercise assignment. The three tasks (written exam, lab report and exercise assignment) have to be delivered. Students have to submit the lab report and the exercise assignment, and students must take the exam.
The written exam counts 50%, the lab report counts 20% and the exercise assignment counts 30%.

Method of work

Lectures and compulsory exercises in the laboratory. Project assignment with the design of a road. Testing of road materials in the laboratory.
