Child Welfare in a Cultural Context

Dette er studietilbudet for studieår 2020-2021.


The student will have acquired knowledge:
  • about different perspectives on children’s rights
  • about parenting in different cultures
  • about important concepts and theories in relation to cultural diversity


The student will be able to:
  • reflect on culture, including one’s own, and its relevance in diverse social work situations involving children
  • apply intercultural communication skills in interactions with service users and other professionals
  • demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness in diverse practice situations.

General competencies
The student will have
  • the ability to critically reflect on the context and origin of theories and concepts and their relevance for practice situations
  • increased ethical awareness related to cultural diversity
  • the ability to distinguish personal differences from cultural differences


Increased global migration demands social workers to be culturally sensitive towards ethnic groups and cultural practices. "Child Welfare in a Cultural Context" focuses on exploring diverse cultural views of childhood and parenting. Important topics are children's rights, cultural awareness and sensitivity, as well as communication skills.
The course is taught through a combination of lectures, group assignments and workshops. The course workshops are run by academic staff with professional social worker background, and provide the students with skill training. Group assignments are used to further enhance the skill training, and they offer an opportunity for the students to reflect on their ethical and professional conduct.


Applicants must be approved by their own educational institution, and students who have completed three semesters at their home institution will be prioritized.

Vilkår for å gå opp til eksamen/vurdering

75% compulsory attendance in seminars and groups. Attendance between 60 and 75% can entitle a student to take the final exam only if an additional written piece of work is handed in, and if it receives a passing mark. Attendance below 60% leads to exclusion from the exam, irrespective of circumstances.

To ensure quality in the study program and a good learning environment for students and teachers, early dialogues are conducted in all courses each semester, as well as standardized course evaluation at least every three years. The evaluation of the study program and the courses will be in accordance with the university's system for quality control.
