Communication in Service Organizations

This is the study programme for 2020/2021.


Communication is one of the most central aspects of organizing, whether the focus is on leadership practices, motivating employees, conveying and implementing decisions, negotiations, or changes. Organizational communication influences organizational members' sense of empowerment, trust, openness and credibility. This course aims to contribute to increased understanding of how leaders can design and implement effective internal and external communication in order to accomplish organizational goals and build a strong and inclusive organizational culture.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon completion of this course, the candidate:
  • Has knowledge and understanding of basic principles and models of internal and external organizational communication.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of how organizational communication practices influence an organization's effectiveness and culture.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of central principles of intercultural communication in an organizational context.

Skills
Upon completion of this course, the candidate:
  • Can recognize central principles of planning and implementing effective internal and external communication in an organization, and is able to apply these in order to communicate more effectively in an organizational context.
  • Can describe central principles and dimensions of organizational communication as they affect organizational culture and change.
  • Can recognize and apply central principles of intercultural communication in different cultural contexts.

General competence
Upon completion of this course, the candidate:
  • Can reflect on ethical problems related to internal , external and intercultural organizational communication.
  • Can apply knowledge and skills concerning organizational and intercultural communication in new areas and situations.
  • Can communicate about academic issues, analyses and conclusions in the field of organizational and intercultural communication.

Contents

This course gives a theoretical introduction to both internal and external aspects of organizational communication. The course focuses on understanding how leaders can design and implement effective internal and external communication to accomplish organizational goals. Central themes are organizational culture, organizational identity, leadership communication, conflict management, change communication, crisis communication and reputation management. In today's global hospitality and tourism industry, intercultural communication is a vital part of organizational communication. This course will thus also focus on central aspects of intercultural communication in an organizational context.
