A graduate student, who has completed 2-year master degree in Industrial Asset Management, shall have the following learning outcome defined as knowledge, skills and general competence:


  • The candidate has advanced and multi-disciplinary knowledge within the academic field, and specialized insight into selected areas of the field.

  • The candidate has thorough and relevant knowledge within engineering and management of advanced, complex and integrated industrial assets (e.g. production systems/ processes, manufacturing facilities, technical systems/ machines/ equipment, etc.) in all life cycle phases (i.e. concept development and design, construction and assembly, installation and commissioning, operation and maintenance, modification and up gradation, and removal and recycling).

  • The candidate has knowledge within the academic field that can be applied to technology development and innovation in new areas with practical and/or theoretical importance.

  • The candidate has knowledge to analyze practical or academic problems within the field, on the basis of the history, traditions, distinctive character as well as industrial and societal needs.

  • The candidate can analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations within the academic field and work independently with practical and theoretical problem resolution. The candidate can independently identify, map, analyze and resolve challenging production/ process/ manufacturing problems by applying existing theories, methods and interpretations in the field.
  • The candidate can use relevant methods and knowledge for research and scholarly / professional development work in an independent manner.

  • The candidate can analyze and deal critically with various sources of information and apply them to structure and formulate practical and/or academic arguments.
  • The candidate can carry out an independent, limited research or development project under supervision, and in accordance with current research ethical norms.

General competence
  • The candidate can analyze relevant academic, professional and research ethical challenges and be qualified to participate in developing and implementing new technology, methods and principles as well as engineering or managerial solutions for the industry.

  • The candidate can apply knowledge and skills in new areas to carry out advanced assignments and projects.
  • The candidate can communicate extensive work professionally and independently, and master terminology, language and expressions in the academic field.

  • The candidate can communicate academic issues, as well as analyses and conclusions in the field, both with specialists and the general public.

  • The candidate can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes.

Consisting of a total of 120 ECTS, this master program is made up of 20 ECTS basic methods subjects (B) which consolidate and continue the mathematical and scientific foundation from the bachelor program. 20 ECTS are core offshore subjects (C), which will give the students a broad and common platform in offshore technology as well as complement and expand subjects from the bachelor program. The remaining 75 ECTS consist of 40 ECTS of compulsory specialization subjects (S), 10 ECTS of elective subjects (E) and a final master thesis of 30 ECTS (M).

The faculty will offer a list of recommended electives. The students themselves must check that they have the necessary basic knowledge to be able to take these courses. Other electives must be approved by the department, but the students will have considerable freedom in selecting suitable elective courses depending on personal interests and career opportunities.

The master thesis can be prepared either at the faculty or in cooperation with industry. Many students base their master theses on practical projects in various organizations. In order to be assigned a suitable and a relevant theme for a master thesis, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated as cited in Regulations for Master's thesis. Project proposals for Master thesis should formally be pre-approved by an academic staff member of the Industrial asset management group of the department.

UiS aims to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. Also the content and scope of courses will have to be changed over time due to changes in professional environment, use of new technology, new practices and theories, and general social changes.

The course work consists of lectures, project assignments, group work, obligatory and voluntary exercises and laboratory work. The course descriptions provide further information about:
