University of Stavanger music production and recording student Szymon Piotrowski won Gold in the Student Recording Competition at the 136th Audio Engineering Society’s annual European convention in Berlin at the end of April. His recording of fellow Department and Music and Dance students in the group BenReddik was judged to best in the Traditional Studio Recording category by a panel of prominent recording professionals. The competition included entries from university students throughout the world. In addition to the recognition from the AES, Szymon received prizes from the competition’s audio industry sponsors.

Szymon Piotrowski has been active in this year’s music production and recording program at the UiS Department of Music and Dance. In addition to studio recording projects with other students, he has recorded many concerts by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in the new Stavanger Concert House, as well as jazz concerts at Stavanger Jazz Forum’s Spor 5. After completing the music production program this spring, Szymon is returning to his native Poland to continue working as a producer/engineer and musician.

The Audio Engineering Society is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. Founded in the United States in 1948, the AES has grown to become an international organization that unites audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research. Mark Drews, director of the music production and recording studies at UiS, has been active for decades in the AES, and  helped establish the AES’s wide range of student activities, including the Student Recording Competition.
