Though geography (and not time) accounts for the largest variation in market shares of U.S. consumer packaged goods, the analysis of cross-sectional or panel data through spatial econometric models did only recently gain foothold in marketing science.

Spatial econometric models build on the notion that locations of observations itself can be informative about the response variable thereby utilizing Tobler’s first law of geography that “everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things”. If we expand the notion of space to demographics, psychometrics, or social networks, spatial models can capture a wide variety of (marketing) phenomena (whether observed to the researcher or not) that impact consumer and/or firm behavior. The purpose of this seminar is to give a brief introduction to spatial econometric models and to discuss current and future applications of these models in marketing
